Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka both lose in US Open first round

The pair took turns dominating each other, but neither could make it out of the quarters

They were up and down, but it was the same in many other matches in the tournament

Serena Williams was left frustrated after having to watch her nemesis Naomi Osaka in the quarters when the two women met in the last eight

Eden Hazard took down the rest of his team-mates to reach the quarterfinals, leaving them in limbo

The women’s draw for the US Open takes the best-of-five format and the top three seeds will start their matches on Tuesday, and the men’s draw has the same format and seeds.

In the women’s draw, Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams both dropped out of the tournament.

While it was still a long way to go for them, the way they battled each other on Tuesday was a microcosm of how they play against one another.

Osaka, who won five successive Grand Slam singles titles with a run of five consecutive tournament victories, and Williams had both lost in the first round of grand slams at the US Open in the previous year.

The match started with Williams losing to Osaka, who had previously beaten Williams in the second round at the Australian Open, and Osaka beating the rest of her team-mates en route to the quarterfinals.

She will now face Jelena Ostapenko after she defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-2 6-1 to reach the last eight.

With the fourth seed, Simona Halep advancing with a 6-4 3-6 6-4 victory over Ekaterina Makarova, as well as Angelique Kerber’s 6-7(4) 6-3 victory over Katerina Siniakova, it is the top three seeds that are in limbo.

They will all have to wait to find out who will come out on top on Tuesday in Cincinnati.
